Located in North Platte, NE, Ash House offers a safe, supportive, and affordable solution for individuals living with physical and mental disabilities who need assistance managing daily tasks. Founded in August 2013 by Shirleen Smith, a registered nurse, Ash House was created with the goal of providing a nurturing environment where individuals can live independently with the support they need. The home was originally established to meet the housing needs of residents displaced by the closing of the Hotel Pawnee, and has since become a vital part of the local community.



At Ash House, we believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to live independently and with dignity. Our mission is to provide affordable independent living in a compassionate and respectful environment that promotes personal growth and self-sufficiency.

The primary goal of Ash House is to help residents develop the skills needed to manage daily life and foster a sense of independence. We offer a safe and peaceful environment where basic needs are met while individuals work on gaining essential skills for self-care, household management, and personal development.



Through personalized care plans and supportive services, we empower each resident to grow at their own pace and improve their quality of life. Our focus on developing Maslow's higher-order skills encourages residents to build upon their existing capabilities and advance toward self-sufficiency.

Accommodations and Services

At Ash House, we offer comfortable and affordable room rentals that include all the necessary amenities for independent living. Here’s what you can expect:

Living Spaces

  • Room rental includes a bed, pillow, bedding, dresser, lamp, TV with cable, and Wi-Fi.
  • Shared spaces include bathrooms, laundry room (with free machine usage), kitchen, and dining area.
  • Security system ensures the safety and security of residents in shared spaces.

Meals and Assistance

  • Two evening meals are provided each week to all residents.
  • Weekly trips to Dollar Store and Walmart for shopping needs.
  • Assistance with medication pick-ups, with a registered nurse on call for residents.

Independent Living with Support

  • Residents enjoy the freedom to come and go as they please, within the guidelines of our community rules.
  • Support with self-care routines, including personal hygiene and household chores.
  • Residents share responsibility for housekeeping, including cleaning their rooms and common areas.

Admission Requirements at Ash House

To ensure a harmonious living environment, Ash House has the following requirements for potential residents:

  • Contractual Obligations: All residents must sign a contract agreeing to the terms of the community and house rules.
  • Code of Conduct: Adherence to a strict code of conduct is required. Serious offenses such as bullying, fighting, or any form of assault may result in immediate eviction.
  • Referral Process: Most residents come through referrals from other facilities, family members, or self-referrals.
  • Self-Care Expectations: Residents are responsible for their daily hygiene routines, including at least a weekly shower. They also maintain the cleanliness of their bedroom and contribute to cleaning common areas.
  • Linen and Clothing Care: Residents must wash and store their own linens and clothing.
  • Cooperation and Chores: All residents participate in shared household chores to maintain a cooperative living environment.
  • Smoke-Free and Sober Environment: Ash House maintains a no-smoking, no-alcohol, and no-non-prescribed drug policy within the house.

Rent Details

  • Rent is set at $600/month, including utilities, internet, and laundry facilities.
  • This all-inclusive fee ensures a comfortable, secure, and well-maintained living space for all residents.
